The Best North San Diego Hiking Trails

North San Diego County offers some of Southern California's best hiking opportunities. The region's varied landscape ranges from chaparral-covered hills and oak-studded valleys to scenic lagoons and granite summits overlooking the Pacific Ocean. 

Below, you’ll find four of the best hikes in San Diego, all located near our vacation rentals in Fallbrook and Bonsall.

Potato Chip Rock

Perched atop Mount Woodson near Poway, Potato Chip Rock has become one of San Diego County's most recognizable hiking destinations. The unusual rock formation appears to jut dramatically over the mountainside, creating a memorable photo opportunity. The journey to reach it is just as rewarding, offering expansive views across inland San Diego County.

The Trail

The most popular route begins at Lake Poway and follows a well-maintained trail up the slopes of Mount Woodson. At approximately 7.5 miles round trip, the hike is considered moderately strenuous due to its steady elevation gain and exposed terrain. 

While experienced hikers will find the route manageable, beginners should be prepared for a sustained uphill climb, particularly during warmer months.

The Destination

The trail culminates at the famous Potato Chip Rock, a Southern California hiking icon. Along the way, hikers pass giant boulders, chaparral-covered hillsides, and panoramic viewpoints that stretch toward the Pacific Ocean on clear days. 

Most visitors reach the summit in two to three hours before returning along the same out-and-back route.

The Trail

Beginning near Poway, the trail climbs through rolling hills covered in coastal sage scrub and chaparral. The route is approximately 5.8 miles round trip and is generally considered moderate, making it accessible to hikers with average fitness levels. 

The Destination

At the summit, hikers are rewarded with nearly 360-degree views of inland San Diego County, surrounding mountain ranges, and distant glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. During spring, wildflowers often add color to the landscape, while winter storms can leave snow visible on higher mountain peaks in the distance. 

Most hikers reach the summit in roughly two hours before returning via the same out-and-back route.

Annie's Canyon Trail

Hidden within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, Annie's Canyon Trail offers a completely different hiking experience than North County's mountain summits. The trail combines coastal wetlands, wildlife viewing, and a narrow sandstone slot canyon that feels unlike anything else in the region.

The Trail

This short but memorable hike covers approximately 1.5 miles as a loop through the reserve. While most of the route is easy, the slot canyon section includes narrow passageways and short ladders that add a sense of adventure. 

The trail is suitable for most visitors, though those uncomfortable with tight spaces may prefer alternate routes through the reserve.

The Destination

The highlight is the sandstone slot canyon itself, where hikers weave through narrow rock walls sculpted by centuries of erosion. The trail eventually emerges at a scenic overlook above San Elijo Lagoon, offering views of the wetlands, surrounding hills, and nearby coastline. 

Most visitors complete the loop in less than an hour.

Several routes lead to the summit, with the most common trail covering approximately 4.5 miles round trip. The hike is moderately challenging, featuring a steady climb through grasslands and open hillsides. 

The Destination

The summit delivers panoramic views that extend from the Pacific coastline to inland mountain ranges. On exceptionally clear days, hikers may even spot Catalina Island on the horizon. 

The journey to the top typically takes one to one-and-a-half hours, and most visitors return via the same out-and-back route after spending time enjoying the views.
